New fast-charging stations boosting electric vehicle use

Not long after Richmond Heights installed fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, the municipal building where they were located closed due to COVID-19. Now, the buildings are open, and the use of the stations is increasing.

“People are using the charging stations...the use of the stations is increasing. It has worked great for our residents,” said Richmond Heights Mayor Jim Thomson. The charging stations are located at the municipal building in Richmond Heights, which makes it convenient for customers to charge their electric vehicles while conducting business with the various city departments located there.

The stations were built as part of Ameren Missouri’s Charge Ahead program, which aims to eliminate the barriers for electric car charging and promote the use of more efficient and cleaner cars and trucks on Missouri roads through the development of fast-charging stations.

“Ameren Missouri is delivering on our promise to support a cleaner environment with emission-free vehicles and the infrastructure to support them,” said Bryan Shannon, Ameren Missouri business development manager. “With more stations available, drivers can have confidence to take that longer road trip.”

AAA has forecasted that road trips will account for 97 percent of favored travel this summer. Electric vehicles can offer an even safer experience for those looking to social distance. A driver will often start a road trip by 'filling-up' the vehicle at home the night before. Once on the road, EV charging stations are usually located at hotels, grocery stores, gas stations or banks.

Ameren Missouri’s Charge Ahead program has aided in adding several fast-charging stations to keep electric vehicles fueled for summer vacations, in addition to Richmond Heights. The first of these stations opened earlier this year in Warrenton, a second opened in St. Louis, and more are planned.

Thomson was elected to his second term as mayor in June when the municipal election date was pushed back due to the pandemic. Born and raised in Richmond Heights, Thomson has good things to say about his community. “A good place to live, work, and raise a family. The people in Richmond Heights are as good as you can find anywhere in the United States.”
