Smart Energy Plan upgrades benefit customers in Southeast Missouri
In late July, Ameren Missouri took a huge step by advancing the new Cape Rock Substation project, which will increase reliability and capacity for 7,300 residential and business customers in and around Cape Girardeau. July 23 marked a key milestone when crews hoisted two new state-of-the-art transformers into place.
"Built in Missouri, by Missourians, for Ameren Missouri customers," said Russ Burger, director of Ameren Missouri's SEMO Division. "These new transformers were built by WEG Transformers USA in Washington, MO. Keeping our construction partners local, like WEG, helps Missouri's economy grow and at the same time is modernizing the state's energy grid."
This project, which will lower operating costs and save customers money, is part of Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan, which was enabled by the Missouri Legislature's passage of SB 564 in 2018. The grid modernization program is designed to enhance reliability and provide a smarter energy infrastructure across the state.
Construction on the $12.5 million Cape Rock Substation started in March and is scheduled to be serving customers by the end of 2020.
