Ameren Missouri investing in reliable energy for when customers need it most

As energy demand increases, strengthening the energy grid is more important than ever

Ameren Missouri recently filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission to build an 800-megawatt simple-cycle natural gas energy center to serve as a reliable source of energy, ready to use when customers need it most. The Castle Bluff Energy Center is designed to bolster grid reliability and deliver energy on the hottest summer days and coldest winter nights.

"Customers across the state count on the reliable, affordable energy Ameren Missouri provides around the clock, and Castle Bluff will be one of the ways we're going to be able to meet their needs in the future," said Mark Birk, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri.

The Castle Bluff Energy Center represents a significant investment in reliable energy for Ameren Missouri’s customers.

The Castle Bluff Energy Center will be built on the site of the former Meramec Energy Center in St. Louis County. By building at the site of the former power plant, the Castle Bluff Energy Center can utilize the existing infrastructure and transmission line access — reducing overall construction time and cost to customers. With timely regulatory approval, construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the energy center expected to be ready to serve customers in 2027.

In addition to establishing a new source of reliable energy for Ameren Missouri customers, the project is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs, several permanent jobs and additional tax revenue for St. Louis County and the surrounding region. The Castle Bluff Energy Center project represents a $900 million investment in the region's electric grid.
