Winter is coming: Here's how to reconnect natural gas service
Schedule a service appointment with Ameren Missouri before the first freeze
With chilly nights approaching, Ameren Missouri encourages its customers to schedule an appointment and reconnect their natural gas service before temperatures drop.
“Many students and renters may not realize their furnace runs on natural gas until they try to turn on the heat,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations for Ameren Missouri. “Scheduling your reconnection to natural gas service early ensures you’ll be ready when the cold temperatures set in.”
Unlike most utilities, reconnecting natural gas service requires a scheduled visit from Ameren Missouri. Someone 18 or older must be present while a technician inspects connections, activates the meter and relights pilot lights. Appointments fill up quickly. To make an appointment, customers should call 1.800.552.7583 or visit Ameren.com/MoveIn.
While natural gas is a safe, efficient, clean-burning fuel, Ameren Missouri reminds its customers to keep safety first when using natural gas-fueled appliances.
Know the signs of a leak: A rotten-egg odor, hissing sounds near appliances or bubbles in standing water could signal an issue.
Act immediately: Leave the area with people and pets, avoid electronics or flames and call Ameren Missouri at 1.800.552.7583 from a safe distance.
Keep appliances clear: Don’t stack boxes, newspapers or other flammable materials around your furnace or water heater.
Never alter safety features: Furnaces, water heaters, ovens and dryers have built-in safety controls. If something seems off, contact your landlord or a qualified technician.
Ameren Missouri responds to gas leak calls 24/7 at no charge. For more safety tips, please visit Ameren.com/NaturalGasSafety.
