Ameren alerts customers of an emerging solar panel scam

Deceptive scammers impersonating Ameren vendors to install solar panels

Ameren Missouri warns its customers to be aware of an emerging solar panel installation scam growing in its service territory. The scam most often occurs through direct phone calls to customers, with scammers claiming to represent Ameren or acting as an official partner of the company.

“Over the last several weeks, we have received numerous reports of widespread scam activity in our area related to solar panel installations,” said Carlos Ross, security manager for Ameren. “These deceptive individuals or companies are targeting our customers and claiming that they are affiliated with or represent Ameren, which is deceptive and not accurate."

Scammers are using the below tactics to target Ameren customers.

  • Scammers often call customers or knock on their doors, claiming to be affiliated with or working for Ameren. The conversation usually includes an offer to install solar panels to lower your monthly energy bill. These deceptive scammers are not affiliated with Ameren.

  • Scammers are using automated calls through an app, while masking their number, company name or providing a non-legitimate callback number.

  • The sales pitch often includes a request to set up an appointment so they can visit your home and speak with you directly.

Ameren reminds its customers that it does not sell solar panels or contract with companies to sell or install residential solar on homes. If you believe you are the target of one of these scams, please take the following steps to protect yourself and your family.

  • Never provide your home address, personal information or financial information over the phone. Hang up and call Ameren Missouri at 1.800.552.7583 or contact local law enforcement to report the scam.

  • If you have interest in solar panel installations for your home or business, thoroughly research to find legitimate companies that offer the service. The Better Business Bureau may also be a good resource in your search.
