Moving the Show-Me State forward with smart energy

Showcasing the progress of Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan in 2024

Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan continues the company's work throughout its service territory to update and modernize the electric grid, making it more resilient and reliable. Created by forward-thinking legislation passed by the Missouri General Assembly in 2018 and renewed in 2022, the Smart Energy Plan has spurred thousands of grid modernization projects – supporting greater reliability from Kirksville to Miner and St. Louis to Excelsior Springs.

These critical improvements provide families and businesses with the reliable energy they need, while keeping costs well below the Midwest and national averages. Those lower rates, coupled with economic development, have helped Missouri attract new business and investment, and created or retained thousands of jobs in the state. In 2024, businesses announced more than $3.1 billion in planned capital investments to relocate or expand in Ameren Missouri's service territory.

"Ameren Missouri has spent approximately $2 billion with Missouri-based suppliers and contractors through the Smart Energy Plan, representing more than 1,200 businesses in 60 counties," said Mark Birk, chairman and president of Ameren Missouri. "We are seeing increased interest and opportunity for businesses to locate their operations in our communities. The reliable, resilient energy Ameren Missouri provides is fundamental to economic expansion and vital to supporting our nation's critical infrastructure."

Smart Energy Plan upgrades through 2024 include:

  • 134 new or upgraded substations to better serve communities across Missouri.

  • Approximately 250 miles of upgraded subtransmission lines, improving storm resiliency and providing more flexibility to reroute power during an outage.

  • 1,700 additional smart switches on the system to reduce outages from hours to minutes and even seconds.
