Missouri Voters Make Their Voices Heard During Primary Election
Local, state and federal races decided on Election Day
On Aug. 6, Missouri voters went to the polls to cast their votes on several local, state and federal races, in addition to two proposed changes to the Missouri Constitution during the state's primary election.
At the top of the Republican ticket, Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe defeated Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, Sen. Bill Eigel, R-St. Charles, and several other candidates for the GOP nomination to be Missouri's next governor. On the Democratic ballot, Rep. Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, defeated Springfield businessman Mike Hamra and others to become the Democrat's candidate for governor in November's general election.
"Our victory last night showed that hard work still pays off," said Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe. "That what you do is more important than what you say. And we proved once again that the American dream is alive and well. As governor, I plan to get things done for the people of Missouri — and there is so much to do."
Moving down the ballot, Dave Wasinger defeated Sen. Lincoln Hough, R-Springfield, and Sen. Holly Rehder, R-Scott City, for the Republican nomination in the lieutenant governor's race. Representative Richard Brown, D-Kansas City, defeated Anastasia Syes in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor. In a crowded field for the Republican nomination for secretary of state, Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, won the nomination with 24% of the vote. Representative Barbara Phifer, D-St. Louis, won the Democratic nomination for secretary of state. Treasurer Vivek Malek defeated Rep. Cody Smith, R-Carthage, and Sen. Andrew Koenig, R-Manchester, to win the Republican nomination for state treasurer. In a spirited contest for the Republican nomination in the race to be Missouri's attorney general, incumbent Andrew Bailey defeated Will Sharf by a 63% - 37% margin.
Over in the General Assembly, five Missouri House incumbents, all Republicans, were defeated in the primary election. In the Missouri Senate, no senators running for reelection lost on Aug. 6.
