Peregrine falcons return to Ameren Missouri's Falcon Cam
Tune in to see Peregrine falcon chicks hatch and grow
This spring, outdoor enthusiasts can once again follow the incredible journey of a Peregrine falcon family in real time. Ameren Missouri’s Falcon Cam has returned to provide an up-close look as the young falcons hatch and prepare for their first flight. As of today, there are four out of a possible five eggs in the nest box.
For Peregrine falcons, egg incubation time is approximately 30 days.
Peregrine falcons, once nearly eradicated from Missouri, have made a steady comeback, with at least 14 known breeding pairs across the state. They often lay their eggs in high places such as tall buildings, cliffs or old tree cavities rather than building nests and never bring any sticks, grasses or other materials to the nest.
"The Falcon Cam continues to captivate viewers, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of these incredible birds," said Julianne Randazzo, career environmental scientist at Ameren Missouri. “It is a special opportunity to witness the birds up close and celebrate the continued success of this once endangered species.”
The Falcon Cam is made possible by Ameren Missouri’s partnership with World Bird Sanctuary and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Since 2012, these organizations have come together to share this unique perspective of local wildlife with the public.
“It’s only through partnerships like this that wildlife conservation efforts, like the Peregrine falcon recovery program, can be successful,” said Christopher Cain, urban wildlife biologist at the Missouri Department of Conservation. “Having a livestream provides many benefits for viewers, allowing folks to see and appreciate the ‘predator and prey’ reality of our natural world, even in urban settings.”
Watch the live feed from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. (CDT) seven days a week to see the eggs hatch and the chicks grow until leaving the nest, typically in mid-June. Web and digital content editors wishing to embed the livestream on their website can contact communications@Ameren.com for an embed code.
