Fast-charging stations will help power EVs in NE Missouri
Ameren Missouri expands EV charging capabilities across the region
Electric vehicle (EV) owners can now travel across northeast Missouri without worrying about where to charge, thanks to three new fast-charging stations in the region. Travelers and local residents can conveniently charge their EVs in as little as 30 to 45 minutes, so they can hit the road relaxed and re-charged.
Ameren Missouri has partnered with three Ayerco gas stations to install fast-charging stations in Kirksville, Bowling Green, and Canton. Charging stations will be able to charge four cars simultaneously and can give drivers an 80% charge in as little as 30-45 minutes depending upon the vehicle – a process that can typically take several hours when charging at home.
“We’re seeing more drivers adopt electric vehicles, both locally and those who pass through town on their way to other destinations,” said Brad Ayers, operations director of Ayerco. “Installing charging stations allows us to serve these customers too, and brings them into our convenience stores for snacks, drinks, and other products.”
At the EV charging stations, the host site provides the electricity, and drivers pay the host a per-kilowatt-hour fee to charge. Since the payment is always electronic and cash-free, EVs offer an even safer experience for those looking to social distance.
“We’ve prioritized working toward net-zero carbon emissions in our own business, as well as supporting carbon reduction from transportation,” said Bryan Shannon, Ameren Missouri’s business development manager. “The new charging stations are part of our Charge Ahead program, which is designed to make it easier for Missouri residents and businesses to choose electric cars and trucks that contribute to a cleaner environment.”
Ameren Missouri joined other Midwest utilities recently to commit to building a vast network of fast-charging stations throughout the Midwest, making it possible for drivers to travel farther, such as St. Louis to Denver or Detroit to Oklahoma City, in electric vehicles. The Ayerco charging stations are three of 11 that Ameren Missouri completed along highway corridors in 2020, with more to come in 2021.
Through the Charge Ahead program, Ameren Missouri also offers incentives for local businesses to host additional EV charging stations on their own parking lots, ultimately installing 1,000 EV charging stations at 350 locations across the state.
