Empowered to improve reliability in North St. Louis County
Two 45-ton WEG transformers built in Washington, Missouri, made their way to the new Ameren Missouri Shackelford Substation in North St. Louis County in mid-September. The transformers are made in Missouri, by Missourians, for Ameren Missouri customers.
The new $8.4 million Shackelford Substation will replace a 60-year-old substation with modernized equipment and technology that will improve reliability and increase future capacity. This upgrade will lower operating costs and will save customers money.
"I'm proud to work as an engineer on an Ameren Missouri Smart Energy Plan project that's improving reliability for my neighbors," says Tensley Robinson, career engineer, Missouri Customer and Power Operations. "The North County area has experienced a high volume of outages during storm events and we're focused on improving the reliability for this area. It just makes me feel good knowing the work I'm doing has an impact on the people in my community."

The Shackelford Substation is being upgraded as part of Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan. The work here will improve reliability for more than 4,600 customers. The self-healing system will use smart technology to more rapidly detect and isolate outages, speeding power restoration. The project was started on May 26, 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. The Shackelford project is just one of several new substations planned to improve reliability for North County customers.
Also, as part of Ameren Missouri's Smart Energy Plan, crews are upgrading the surrounding overhead and underground lines and poles, automated sensors and automated smart technology equipment to provide additional capacity to North County customers.
